Who is Lyndsay Adler?
Lindsay Adler is an American portrait and fashion photographer based out of Manhattan, New York. She is best known for her fashion photography which she says is a 'reflection of herself'. She usually creates photos for brands and magazines, during the creation of these images she really takes a deep look in to the brands or magazines to really find out how her images should look and support the brands/magazines. She loves to shoot women in a glamorous, strong and powerful way this is to portray that there is more to women than just looking sexy. This could be to be different to most photographers that shoot women in a sexual/ revealing way. What inspires her? In one of Lyndsay's videos on her YouTube channel, she says that movies, magazines and some other things inspires her to create the photos she does. One thing that inspires her the most is the reward she feels at the end of creating the photos. She says that when she dies or she when she gets older and she doesn't shoot anymore she wants people to remember her by the photos she created, Although this is not inspiration on what she should make next, I feel it inspires her to always do her best when creating photos. |
What techniques did Lyndsay use?
When Lyndsay Adler was completing this shoot one of her techniques was to make a story to go along with the shoot to help her create the photos she knows she would love. More of the shooting techniques she used was by testing out the lights lots in this shoot ( brightness, colour, angle). She also tries different angles with the camera when shooting her model to see which angle looks best with the lighting she has chose to reflect of her models face. |
Lyndsay Adler sprayed water on the mirror so when she does her models reflection it looks like it has been raining, which was a part in her story that she created so she knew what sort of photos she would be creating.
She created this sheet so that other people can create the same shoot, this was a really good idea because if she looked back at her images and she doesn't like them she kept a full record of all the angles and colours she used to create the last lot of photos.
|
Another one of her techniques was to not change the actual colour of the light but was to put colour gel on top of the light, this was so that she could merge colours together to create different colours.
Another one of her techniques was to do really dark makeup and slick back hair on her model to really get the full story and to make her stand out against the bright lights and colours she will be using in her shoot.

Step 1:
The first thing I did to this image was crop it as I caught Lydia holding the light in the back of the image. Step 4:
The vibrancy of the image needed to only be increased by a very small amount so the colours would look lighter, this step really made Lydia's eyes stand out. |
Step 2:
Then I made the brightness and contrast of the image a little lighter so the colours and shine on Lydia's face would show more. Step 5:
The highlights and shadows of the image were increased the most out of all. This was to really show off the colours and lights around Lydia. |
Step 3:
I then look at the temperature and tint of the image higher so it would look more warm, not sharp. Step 6:
Finally the exposure of the image was increased again to make little features stand out in the photo. |

Who is Lisa Kokin?
Lisa was born in 1954 making her currently 69 years old, she is an Artist, Art instructor and Art coach. She lives in El Sobrante, California, outside of San Francisco. Why this video? I chose this video for my website as it actually has Lisa Kokin in it describing all her work. I felt having Lisa herself taking is better that just a showcase of her work under music. 'I like money in its shredded state because it is stripped of value and power.' |
To try and emulate these artists work I am not only going to have to take a photo I am also going to have to do work on the image by hand. As Maurizio Anzeri does quite a lot of sewing on the the photos after they have been printed. I have noticed that when he sews on the image most of the persons face is covered.
When trying to emulate I am going to have to learn how to sew and experiment different poses and angles on my model when shooting them. I will complete this shoot in lesson time, using a model, camera, white backdrop and maybe some artificial lighting I will close the blinds if necessary. I will then to on to edit the photo by hand in the lesson time as well. I think this shoot will go well as long as I experiment with different techniques just as Maurizio Anzeri and Lisa Kokin would have done. After the pictures are printed I need to think about what sort of sewing I am going to put on the image before I do it and could ruin the photo. |
